Respiratory Certification Physicals

Many jobs require the use of a respirator as a standard safety practice to protect employees from inhaling toxins or fine dust particles.

While respirators are designed to help keep employees safe on the job, not everyone can safely wear a respirator. SafeWorks Illinois performs respiratory certification physicals – following OSHA standard 1910.134 – to evaluate whether your employees can safely wear a respirator on the job.

We begin the process by having each employee fill out the respirator questionnaire form. One of our medical providers will evaluate the questionnaire form and determine the employee’s medical needs to obtain respirator clearance. Depending on the questionnaire form, that will determine if the employee will need a respirator physical, in addition to the pulmonary function test, chest x-ray and fit test.

We also perform respirator fit testing as part of our respiratory physical protocol. These are required for all tight-fitting respirators like supplied-air respirators and many air-purifying respirators. OSHA requires fit testing before a variety of uses including first use, changes to use, and during annual assessments.

Any severe, life-threatening injury or illness should immediately report to the nearest hospital emergency room.
