SafeWorks Illinois Functional Capacity Evaluations
A
functional capacity evaluation is a tool that can objectively
measure a client’s current level of overall function
compared to his or her physical job demands.
Components
to a FCE include:
| > |
An
intake interview to allow the evaluator to gather information
regarding the history of the client’s injury and
well as other factors such as their current lifestyle,
thoughts regarding returning to work, previous injuries,
other significant health conditions, reactions to medications,
pain rating, tendencies toward symptom magnification,
and job description. |
| > |
A
job site evaluation that should be conducted prior to
the FCE whenever possible to allow for objective documentation
of the client’s actual physical demands of the job. |
| > |
Physical
abilities testing to evaluate the client’s ability
to perform a wide variety of physical tasks such as lifting/material
handling, sitting, standing, walking, carrying, bending,
squatting, stair/ladder climbing, pushing/pulling, reaching,
stooping, gripping, etc. |
| > |
A
written report that should be easy to read and provide
the reader with an unbiased, objective account of the
client’s performance. |
